Search Console (or an audit tool) flagged “breadcrumbs” on your store, so you went looking for the setting in your theme — and for most free Shopify themes in 2026, it isn’t there, because it was never built in.
If you’ve read our guide to Shopify structured data, you already know breadcrumbs are one of the five schema types most Shopify stores are missing — that post covers the full set: Product, FAQPage, Organization, WebSite, and BreadcrumbList, all in one pass. This post is only about breadcrumbs: whether your theme shows a breadcrumb trail at all, whether BreadcrumbList markup does anything for rankings, and how to add both if you’re starting from zero.
Short answer up front: Dawn — Shopify’s own free default theme — doesn’t include breadcrumb navigation out of the box, and neither do Craft or Sense, two of the other free 2.0 themes. Breadcrumbs don’t move your rankings directly, but broken or missing breadcrumb markup has measurably cost stores organic traffic in independent testing. Here’s what’s actually going on, and how to fix it.
The visible trail lives in your theme, not in an app — there’s no way around the Liquid code below for that half. The BreadcrumbList schema half is different: Plug In SEO adds it automatically, along with Organization, WebSite, and Product schema, so you likely don’t need the manual JSON-LD below unless you’re not running the app.
“Breadcrumbs” is actually two different things
When an audit says “add breadcrumbs,” it’s usually pointing at one of two separate features that get lumped together:
The clickable path shown on the page itself — e.g. Home › Collections › Running Shoes — that lets a shopper jump back up a level. This is a theme/navigation feature. It helps with internal linking and lets visitors skip the back button.
A JSON-LD block that tells Google the same hierarchy in machine-readable form, so a search result can show the path instead of the raw URL. This is invisible on the page — it only affects how your listing looks in search.
You can have either one without the other. A theme can show a visible trail with no schema behind it, and a store can have BreadcrumbList schema in its JSON-LD with no visible breadcrumb bar at all. Most Shopify stores are missing both by default.
Does your Shopify theme have breadcrumbs by default?
No — not in any of Shopify’s current free 2.0 themes. We checked three of the most common ones directly:
- Dawn — Shopify’s own default free theme. A search of Dawn’s public source code turns up zero breadcrumb sections, snippets, or settings. Shopify’s own Liquid code examples library lists breadcrumb navigation as a snippet you add yourself — not something Dawn ships with.
- Craft & Sense — Shopify’s official Craft and Sense theme store listings publish a full feature list for each theme (search, filtering, mega menu, swatches, and more). Breadcrumb navigation isn’t on either list.
Some paid, non-Shopify-built themes do ship a breadcrumb toggle under the product or collection template in the theme customizer — so it’s worth checking your specific theme’s settings before assuming you need code. But if you’re on Dawn, Craft, or Sense, there’s no hidden toggle to find. You’re adding it, one way or another.
One extra wrinkle if you do add a visible trail: Shopify builds product URLs from the collection you arrived through (e.g. /collections/running-shoes/products/trail-runner), and a breadcrumb built naively off that URL can imply the product “lives” in whichever collection a shopper happened to click from — the same URL pattern behind the duplicate-content issue we cover in our Shopify canonical URL guide. Base your breadcrumb path on the product’s actual primary collection, not just the referring URL.
Does BreadcrumbList schema actually help SEO, or is it just navigation?
Neither the visible trail nor the schema is a ranking factor on its own. Google’s own documentation doesn’t list BreadcrumbList as required for any search eligibility — it’s entirely optional. What it does is change how your result looks and, indirectly, how it performs:
- On desktop, a valid BreadcrumbList can replace the raw URL under your title in the search result with a readable path (e.g. “yourstore.com › Running Shoes” instead of the full URL string).
- On mobile, this stopped mattering as much in January 2025: Google announced it would show only the domain name on mobile search results instead of the breadcrumb path, because the full path was getting cut off on small screens. Desktop results were unaffected, and Google was explicit that site owners don’t need to change anything — BreadcrumbList schema is still supported, still shows on desktop, and Search Console’s Breadcrumb report and the Rich Results Test still validate it.
The clearest evidence that breadcrumb markup matters in practice isn’t a ranking boost — it’s what happens when it breaks. In one documented case, a retailer’s breadcrumb schema started showing an incomplete path in search results after a site change (e.g. just “Clothing” instead of the full “Clothing › Swim & Beachwear”), and the less-specific, less-compelling snippet was associated with an estimated organic traffic drop of roughly 12% on product pages and 6–7% on category pages before it was fixed.
That’s a correlation from one retailer’s test, not a universal law — but it’s a real, measured example of what a broken breadcrumb result can cost, which is a more honest way to think about breadcrumbs than “will this help me rank.”
How to add a visible breadcrumb trail to your theme
If your theme doesn’t already have a toggle for it (check Online Store > Themes > Customize > Product or Collection template first), you’re building it with Liquid:
- In your theme’s
SectionsorSnippetsfolder, create a new file — e.g.breadcrumbs.liquid. - Use Shopify’s official breadcrumb navigation example as your starting template — it builds the trail from the page’s collection and product objects, plus your store’s
linklistsfor menu-based paths. - Render the snippet inside
product.liquidandcollection.liquid(or the equivalent JSON templates in a 2.0 theme) with{% render 'breadcrumbs' %}, placed just inside the main content wrapper. - Base the collection level of the path on each product’s primary collection, not the collection a shopper happened to click through — see the URL note above.
If editing theme code isn’t something you want to take on, a developer, a breadcrumb-specific app from the Shopify App Store, or asking ChatGPT to draft the Liquid snippet for your specific theme are all reasonable routes in. This is genuinely one of the few SEO fixes that lives entirely in theme code rather than in an SEO app’s settings panel.
How to add BreadcrumbList schema
If you’re running Plug In SEO, this part is already done — it adds BreadcrumbList schema automatically, no setting to find or toggle. What follows is for stores handling schema manually, or for understanding what the app is actually generating for you.
Once you have a breadcrumb path (visible or not), the JSON-LD is short and doesn’t need to match your visible design exactly — it just needs to reflect the real page hierarchy. Google’s documented format:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "BreadcrumbList",
"itemListElement": [{
"@type": "ListItem",
"position": 1,
"name": "Running Shoes",
"item": "https://yourstore.com/collections/running-shoes"
},{
"@type": "ListItem",
"position": 2,
"name": "Trail Runner"
}]
}
A few notes straight from Google’s spec: you don’t need a ListItem for your homepage/domain, and the final item (the current page) doesn’t need an item URL at all — just a name. Drop this JSON-LD into a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag on each templated page, generated dynamically from the same collection/product data your visible breadcrumb (if any) uses, so the two never drift out of sync.
How to check what you have right now
Two free tools, no guessing:
- Google’s Rich Results Test — paste in a product or collection URL and it lists every schema type it detects, including whether BreadcrumbList is present and valid.
- Search Console’s Breadcrumbs report (under Enhancements) — shows how many of your indexed pages have valid breadcrumb markup, and flags any errors or warnings across the site at once, rather than page by page.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Shopify theme have breadcrumbs?
Not by default, if you’re on Dawn, Craft, or Sense — none of Shopify’s current free 2.0 themes ship breadcrumb navigation. Some paid third-party themes include a breadcrumb toggle in the customizer under the product or collection template, so it’s worth checking your specific theme’s settings before assuming you need code.
Do breadcrumbs actually help SEO or just navigation?
Both, in different ways. The visible trail helps internal linking and lets shoppers jump back a level without the back button. BreadcrumbList schema isn’t a ranking factor and isn’t required for any search eligibility, but it can replace the raw URL under your title with a readable path in desktop search results — and when it breaks, the resulting less-specific snippet has been linked to real, measurable organic traffic loss in independent testing.
Does adding BreadcrumbList schema improve my Google ranking?
No — Google doesn’t use it as a ranking signal, and it’s explicitly optional in Google’s structured data documentation. Its effect is on how your result displays (a path instead of a URL on desktop) and, by extension, click-through rate — not on where you rank.
Why don’t I see a breadcrumb path in Google’s mobile search results anymore?
Google changed this in January 2025: mobile search results now show only the domain name instead of the breadcrumb path, because the full path was getting cut off on small screens. Desktop results are unaffected, and Google says site owners don’t need to change anything — BreadcrumbList schema is still supported and still validated by the Rich Results Test and Search Console.
Do I need an app to add breadcrumbs to Shopify?
Depends which half. The visible breadcrumb trail is a theme feature added with a Liquid snippet, using Shopify’s own published code example as a starting point — no general SEO app adds that through a settings panel, it lives in the theme. The BreadcrumbList schema half is different: Plug In SEO adds that automatically, no code required.
How is this different from your Shopify structured data guide?
Our Shopify structured data guide covers the full schema picture — Product, FAQPage, Organization, WebSite, and BreadcrumbList — in one pass, as a starting checklist. This guide is narrower and deeper: just breadcrumbs, covering whether your specific theme has them, what BreadcrumbList schema does (and doesn’t do) for SEO, and the actual Liquid and JSON-LD to add both.
Fix the schema half an app can actually fix
The visible breadcrumb trail lives in your theme — that part’s on you or a developer. The BreadcrumbList schema doesn’t have to be a manual project: Plug In SEO’s Scanner flags missing schema and technical issues across your whole site, and adds BreadcrumbList, Organization, WebSite, and Product schema automatically.
